Mold is a fungus that grows indoors and outdoors. This fungus thrives in damp, warm and humid environments, and it often occurs when wood rots and grows damp. However, a normal amount of mold at home isn’t harmful to your health. The only time you should really worry is when you have high concentrations of mold. Mold reproduces by generating spores—they’re invisible to the eye and can become airborne.

The trouble with mold is when it’s toxic. A few kinds of mold are “toxigenic,” meaning in the correct conditions, they can produce very small toxins called “mycotoxins.” When there are more than enough of these fungi, they can lead to all sorts of respiratory problems and could be dangerous to people who have allergies. This is why mold should be removed immediately, and the house should be kept clean and free from humid, damp spaces where mold can grow.

There are a few ways to remove mold, and it largely depends on where you find it.

Some of the common harmful mold types found in a home are Stachybotrys atra (Black Mold), Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Mucor, Fusarium, Acrimonium. Pettyjohn's can safely remove all of these and more.

Mold Locations

Mold inside wall

Hard Surfaces: the removal of mold from hard surfaces can be achieved by using cleaning methods or “protocols” that are developed specifically for the elimination of mold. While you can attempt to clean up small traces of mold yourself, generally it’s best to call the professionals, as missing a spot of black mold could just make the problem even bigger, destroying all of your hard work.

Porous Surfaces: when mold sneaks itself into more porous—or absorbent—surfaces, the only thing to do is to either remove the material or use advanced techniques that we specialize in.

All in all, mold remediation and removal is a costly, labor-intensive project. You must take care to clean the affected area thoroughly (though if the mold has eaten through too much and has gotten behind the walls of your home, it’s better to have the entire wall torn down and repaired.) You should ensure that no mold spores enter your home’s ventilation systems, or your entire family may breathe in mold spores, which can quickly evolve into dangerous diseases.

If you think you need more than just cleaning, and you need to ensure that your home is clean and mold-free, you can surely rely on Pettyjohn’s Cleaning and Mold Removal Services.
